The Struggle of Setting Up a Website....a Means For More Unwanted Emails.

I had the crazy idea that I wanted to publish my own website. I needed a focus, enjoy using the internet, so I thought I'd create a website for photographers.
After some thinking, I came up with a name for the site and somewhere to upload my hard work.I did my research, looked at hundreds of websites for ideas and purchased some suitable software. I was off like a rocket ship, creating banners, links, incorporating some of my own photographs and even a forum for members to join. By this time I was like a kid with a new toy (Well the box the toy came in anyway).
The next thing was website submission.
What a mine field this is. Having checked out a few sites I was feeling down. If I followed all the advice I'd now be bankrupt. It is amazing how many websites puport to being able to get a listing into the top ten of a search, and make lots of money in the process. Just a few clicks and you are pretty much a millionaire!..at a cost of course.
Not being down trodden I decided to go directly to the big search engines and submit the URL. Now all that needed doing was to search for my site and there it would be...proudly sat in amongst the miriad of websites that exist, but no.Was it anywhere to be found? Was this now the opportunity to get thousands looking and joining the site? Was it heck. Nothing. Just a blank screen telling me the website did not exist as far as the search site was concerned.
By now, I had a website no one could find, a disheartening feeling of failure and a spam folder full of emails promising me the world, at a price.
The reality It seems that this is the world of the big corporations or for people with a niche that no one else has yet to cottoned on to. In the world of the internet, the only way to succeed seems to be with lots of money, allowing for greater exposure to gain that much prized search listing slot. But it is fun, and I carry on, until I find a new box to play with

Thank you for writing this for I was wondering about the same thing myself. Great article, an enjoyable and good read. ~Nenita~
I know just what you mean. One suggestion I have found is to put your product up for sale on Clickbank and get more established people to sell to their own lists. You have to give commission however, but half of something is better than all of nothing. Thanks for reading. I checked the site but it doesn't really meet what I am aiming to do with my site.
Hi Derek,>"The reality It seems that this is the world of the big corporations or for people with a niche that no one else has yet to cottoned on to."No it's worse than that I'm afraid. There are no niches left to cotton on to. They have all been flogged to death. Or at least that's how it seems sometimes. :)The trouble is that you not alone. You are competing with millions of others who are all trying to drive traffic to their own websites. Simply uploading a site and submitting it to Google will get you about 1-2 hits per day, and that will probably be from a robot crawler.Professional marketing agencies aside, I would forget about handing over cash to people who claim they will be able to magically generate traffic. At best, you will get listed on their own useless directory sites. Certainly they will not give meaningful hits from interested users. The only way I know of is to build up interest in your site yourself. It takes along time and it's hard work. But, then again, provided that at least a part of the reason your doing this is for enjoyment and satisfaction, you should not be discouraged. It can be very rewarding and you can meet new people. If your project is purely a business venture, however, then perhaps you need to re-evaluate your business plan.Thank you for the comment...My site is merely a personal attempt at achieving a presence on the web in the hope that it could be a useful tool for others in the future. I fully agree with you sentiments though. If your interested in seeing where I have got so far with my site feel free to contact me.
