Is It Time To Start Limiting the Number of Children People Have?

In a world where children are living in conditions where most of us living in “first world countries" cannot even begin to imagine, where children are living each day not knowing if or when their next meal is, where children are suffering unimaginable horrors, and orphanages are bulging at the seems, it appears for some, that they cannot have enough children of their own.

As reported in a number of UK newspapers yesterday (23.11.2009), a woman is currently pregnant with her 14 th child, but has stated that she will continue to have children until she realises her dream of having twins.

So what is wrong with that?, you may ask. She and her husband are well off and can afford to keep them, surely?

The story continues that she collects £50,000 per year in benefits. How can this be right? Many couples with only one or two children, earning a reasonable wage, have to struggle on.

How is this fair?

Worst of all, any penalty would affect her children, it’s not their fault, it’s down to the tax payers to keep her family. And she wants more?

In the current financial climate the burden on the tax payer is ever increasing, but stories like this leave a bitter taste in the mouth.

Is it now time to consider controls on the number of children women can have?

The problem would be….how?

Hi, Derek, your question at the end, the "how," is part of the problem of answering in the affirmative on the prior question. We have many messes that cannot be cleaned up by penalizing life, or conception, however strange the behaviors of some appear to be, or actually are. There are what you or I see as bad motivation and bad parenting in households of one child, fourteen, or any number in between or beyond. These are problems we'd like to see gone, for sure, but the "how" gets way in the way, at least for some of us. You express your arguments well.
